TUT Faculty of Education: The School of Education offers a comprehensive range of educational studies related to Education, Training, and Development through its four distinct Departments. These departments include the Educational Foundation, which concentrates on the fundamental aspects of education, training, and developmental theories within educational studies. This encompasses management, general instructional theories, and the integration of practical learning experiences.
Another department, Primary Education, prioritizes the foundational education and developmental aspects that serve as the cornerstone for schools. The Mathematics, Science, and Business Education department zeroes in on subjects such as Mathematics, Sciences, and Commercial and Business studies in the context of education. Lastly, the Technology and Vocational Education department is dedicated to Technology, Computer Sciences, and Vocational Education studies.

  • Educational Foundation

The Department of Educational Foundation entails the preparation of teachers for the General Education and Training (GET) and Further Education and Training phases on the NQF. More specifically the department offers focused disciplinary learning, the foundations of education including general pedagogical learning, fundamental learning and situational learning spread across the phases of learning. 

  • Maths, Science & Business Education

The undergraduate programmes of the department consist of the following BEd streams: Science (Mathematics, Physical Science and Life Science), Consumer Studies (Hospitality, Mathematical Literacy) and Business (Accounting, Economics and Business Management).  The post-graduate programmes include Honours’, Masters and Doctoral programmes in MSBE. 

  • Primary Education

The Department of Primary Education entails the preparation of teachers for the General Education and Training (GET) phases of the NQF.  It compromises two qualifications which are the B.Ed. Foundation Phase (Grade R-3) and the B.Ed. Intermediate/Senior Phase (Grade 4-9). The main focus of the department is to develop teachers that are well-prepared for reflective classroom practice through innovative methodologies like Assessment for Learning and self-regulatory learning. 

  • Technology & Vocational Education

Technology and Vocational Education entail a study of various aspects of Education specialisations including, but not limited to, Technology Education, Electrical Technology, Civil Technology, Mechanical Technology, Engineering Graphics and Design, Computer Application Technology, Computer Science, Educational Technology, TVET, ACET etc. In other words, it provides the art and science of teaching conversant through research and community engagement.

TUT 2024-2025 Admission Requirements

​​Minimum general admission requirements for study at TUT

No person may be registered as a student in a programme of TUT unless he or she has complied with the following

General admission requirements for TUT

  • A pass mark in English at Senior Certificate level (minimum additional language; certain programmes may require first or home language status)
  • Each course has its own specific admission requirements.
  • Prospective students should note that the admission requirements of individual programmes could change from year to year.
  • For some programmes, students will be required to write an admission test, which will determine whether they will be admitted to the programme, or whether it will be recommended that they enrol for a relevant foundation course.
  • The following table indicates the levels of performance required for entry to specific levels of study:

​​Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy?

All learners are required to take one of the two subjects for NSC-G purposes

​​TUT position:

  • Mathematics is relevant to programmes that require prior knowledge of mathematics; all others may only require Mathematical Literacy. (Details of what each subject entails can be determined by looking at the DoE curriculum statements, available on the DoE website).
