Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) offers a Graphic Design program that equips students with the skills and knowledge necessary to pursue a career in the exciting and dynamic field of design. Through a combination of practical and theoretical coursework, students learn how to create visual communication solutions for a wide range of clients and industries.
The program is designed to develop student’s creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, and technical skills. Students are taught the principles of design, including typography, color theory, composition, and layout, as well as software skills using industry-standard applications such as Adobe Creative Suite. TUT Graphic Design Admission requirements
National Senior Certificate with an endorsement of a bachelor’s degree or a diploma, or an equivalent qualification, with an achievement level of at least 4 for English (home language or first additional language).
Selection criteria
To be considered for this qualification, applicants must have an Admission Points Score (APS) of at least 19.Subjects minimum performance level/score Specifically required subjects: English (first or second language) 4 Additional subjects: Any five other subjects (excluding Life Orientation) with a final score of 15. Assessment procedures
Applicants with a score of 19+ will be invited to submit a portfolio. The top 100 performers will be invited for an informal discussion with the lecturers and a demonstration. The portfolio will contribute 60%, and the informal discussion and demonstration will contribute 40% towards the final admission score.
Advice to prospective students
Prospective students should please note that selection for programs presented at the Faculty of the Arts will be possible only after the successful completion of the relevant evaluation process. Please apply well in advance – from as early as June, but no later than 15 August.

Qualifications obtainable
National Diploma, Bachelor’s Degree in Technology, Master’s Degree in Technology, Doctorate in Technology
- Visual communication designers in design and advertising agencies, the publishing industry and newspapers, the packaging industry, repro and printing concerns, corporations, government departments – anywhere that design, printing, and promotion are needed.
- Students will have the opportunity to work on real-world projects in Graphic Design and build their portfolios.
- The course also includes a mandatory internship where students can gain valuable industry experience.
